Chaste Tree fruits and leaves were a popular remedy in ancient Greece and Rome to promote celibacy, and were worn as a symbol of chastity. The berries were also traditionally used to reduce fever and headaches, stimulate perspiration and dispel wind. In more modern times, Chaste Tree has primarily been used to treat gynaecological conditions, including menstrual irregularities such as promoting menstruation in amenorrhea, mastalgia, to aid in placenta delivery after birth and to facilitate lactation. Chaste Tree is widely available commercially in Germany to treat menstrual irregularities and premenstrual syndrome (PMS).
Numerous clinical trials have been undertaken to verify the effectiveness of Vitex to relieve common symptoms of PMS, such as irritability, mood swings, breast tenderness, headache and constipation, as well as being used to enhance fertility, relieve menopausal symptoms, regulate irregular menstruation, improve acne and promote breast milk production.
Avoid use during pregnancy and lactation unless under proper professional supervision.
