Lemon balm was first used in ancient Greece and Rome as a topical treatment for wounds, it was then also used internally in the Middle Ages as a sedative and, by the 17th century, it was recognised in England and Western Europe for improving mood, stimulating clear thinking and treating dementia.

In current times, Lemon Balm is still widely used for its calming and anxiolytic properties to treat anxiety, stress and insomnia; for its anti-spasmodic and antiinflammatory properties to relieve gastrointestinal symptoms associated with spasms and nervousness; for its cognition-enhancing properties to improve cognitive function and memory; and as a topical treatment for cold sores as well as bacterial and fungal infections, due to its proven antiviral, antibacterial and antifungal actions.

There are no known safety concerns with the use of Lemon Balm during pregnancy or lactation.
